[TV] Ignite TV
Just found out that for me to switch over to Ignite TV I would have to pay DOUBLE my current rate ....
From what I can tell a lot of people are getting Ignite .... I will not be one of them come this coming April 2019 [contract expiry] unless Rogers drops their very expensive pricing proposition. This however becomes a mute point for me when my specific area gets Bell FTTH in the spring. Only issue with Bell FTTH currently is no ipv6 support for Internet. I have set up Ignite TV for a number of my clients and no question its on par with Bell's Fibe TV and in some ways superior [voice activated controls that work remarkably well] but the pricing proposition for Ignite TV is very expensive.

Can Rogers convert from RFoG to EPON?
Is it possible while still retaining current fiber infrastructure?
Right now Bell is destroying Rogers because RFoG is no match to GPON. It simply cant compete with GPON... but if Rogers were to use EPON instead of RFoG then Bell will have serious competition again.

[Internet] Help me decide whether to switch Mom and Dad
Hi everyone
A recent tech support call to Rogers developed into a discussion about my parents' account (I'm authorized on their account). They currently pay $169 tax in for all their TV, home phone and internet. Internet is something like 75/5 or 75/10. I think they have one specialty TV channel but the rest is just Premium cable.
They're both 90 years old and use the internet to check email, browse the net and stream Netflix. I've tried to get them a better deal in the past but for whatever reason it has ended up at this level of service.
So I told the guy 'They don't need massive speed or bandwidth. What they need is to pay a bit less. They're both teachers on a pension'.
Of course what the guy ended up offering me is this: $139 tax in for everything they currently have - upgrade to 'Gigabit' internet which he said is 1024 MB download. Free modem/router with free installation. This deal will be for 2 years. No contract (I think).
So this seems decent in that I save about $400/year for the next two years. So $800 total. At the end of that period I assume their bill will go up drastically, to something like $240 or higher. But I will effectively have another 8 months at my current rate so what this does is locks me into my current rate for 2 years and 8 months.
The thing is, I would be happy to just lock them into what they are paying now or close to it. At age 90, who knows what will be happening in 2 years.
I just wanted your take on the following question:
The absolute #1 priority for me is stability. I can't be over there troubleshooting every few days. They can't interact with tech support. It's my job. I have read online that there are significant problems with this Gigabit service. Slower than 1 GB/s speed wouldn't be a game changer, but having things go down every time there's a firmware update would be disaster for me.
So
1) Is this service stable? and
2) What does everyone think of that offer, and
3) If I call back enough times and get the right Loyalty rep, could I lock them in at $139 for the two years on their current package and not have to worry about new tech, new routers, etc etc?
Thanks for any comments.

[Internet] Slow wifi speed with Rogers Gb vs Bell 25mb
Hi,
I currently have a Bell internet (+tv) connection and a Rogers internet connection.
I have had Bell (homehub 3000) for over a year, but they can only offer a max of 25 down where I live and so I just bought Rogers (hitron coda 4582u) at 1000 down / 30 up for a month to decide if I want to switch from Bell to Rogers.
Another person in my house connects to the Rogers modem over ethernet and gets about 400 down and so is satisfied with the speed bump.
I have an older laptop (Lenovo B5400) and connect to Rogers or Bell over wifi.
Here is the strange thing, I get better download speeds on my Bell connection and lower download speeds on my Rogers connection. Could someone possibly explain what the potential issue could be? This is the speed test result. Believe it or not, this is actually a good speed for the Rogers connection :(
[att=1]
During the test my laptop was the only device connected to the Rogers modem; while my Bell modem had my laptop and the Bell tv box connected to it during the test.
These are some basic things I have ruled out:
- Its the same laptop, and I connect to both on 2.4G using wireless g (that's the best my laptop can do)
- Where I sit with the laptop I am actually closer to the Rogers hitron modem, and there are no barriers or walls between me and either modem.
- I have tried to cycle the channels, or keep both Bell and Rogers modems on the same channel, keep both modems on the auto channel option, but none of these made a difference
- I changed the Channel bandwidth on the Rogers modem from 20/40HZ to the 20HZ option
Any advice or a solution would be great.

Porting Out my Rogers Cell Phone
Hi,
I've had enough of Rogers high prices. Would like to know, if I make plans with another company to port my cell phone number over to, when Rogers sees this and if they call me to make a better deal than they've offered previously, and I take Rogers new offer... are there any fees that I may have to pay to the company I was going to port my number too?
PS. I'm after nothing but a cell phone voice usage plan. No data, no texting, none of that crap. Simply a cell phone package used to make phone calls. Could anyone please recommend a good company for that as well.
Thank you

[Internet] Rogers throttling
Hello,
I'm typing this up as a PSA for everyone who lives in Ottawa, or perhaps really for anyone dealing with Rogers as their service provider.
I recently subscribed to the Ignite Gigabit internet package which came with TV and home phone. A promotion from a Rogers rep who called us at home with the offer. What she didn't tell us over the phone was that we were grossly overpaying for our current package. We ignored that part and enjoyed the package at first. Then came the issues. I'll skip a bit here but the TV wasn't watchable due to constant loss of signal on a wired service. The internet wasn't giving 50% of the advertised gigabit. So we call and cancel it all except for the internet. Tech comes in solves the internet issues saying the central hub had something weird but he fixed it. I test on my devices, he tests on his, were both ok with what we see.
Forward a week and after a large downloading spree on steam (new install on the PC) I suddenly start getting issues again. However now there's a major difference, when I turn on my VPN I go from 5 mbps to 250 mbps (!). Upload going from 30 mbps to 20 with the VPN running (as one would expect). MS also affected as expected. Now I get curious because the VPN increasing my internet download speed by around 2000% seemed odd. I start running tests. Speed tests on fast.com, speedtest.net and testmynet with the VPN on and off. I have screenshots of a bunch of the tests that I've done and they all show the exact same thing. Rogers is throttling my download speed and only my download speed. I test on wired and wireless devices getting similar odd results. I also do the same for 2.4g and 5g.
4 techs later, I'm being told that a senior tech is coming to my home now. You see, the last techs I had over sent one tech to me in my home to run tests while another who had come in his own van was messing with the central hub. Not sure what that was about but suddenly the internet speeds on the techs devices was running in the 500 mbps on wireless. Couldn't get the same results however which he tried to blame on the PC, the ethernet cable, programs on the computer interfering, etc..
What are your thoughts? I have screenshots to show but I'm not sure how to show them here. Contacting the CRTC seems like an option but what would that solve? Like the American FCC, the CRTC doesn't have teeth to do much against Rogers who blatantly throttles the internet of paying customers. I think according to the CRTC, Rogers isn't even required to inform their customers that they are doing it! It's absurd.
I filed complaints with both the CRTC and the CCTS. Anyone else experiencing this sort of thing? If someone with Rogers who has unlimited data who wants to do a test and download 500 gigs of data overnight and see what happens?
edit: Thank you for approving this thread. If anyone has any questions or wants information I am more than happy to provide it.
edit2: I've confirmed that a Senior Technician will be at my home in the next 72 hours. Does anyone have suggestions for questions I should be asking him?

[Internet] Rogers Issues
My previous thread is here: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32166923-Internet-Rogers-throttling
Should anyone want to catch up on everything that's already been done to try and solve this issue.
My current situation is that the internet hasn't worked as it should for almost a month now (see the speed tests I posted in the other thread). I've been waiting for a Rogers Senior Technician to contact me for the last week. I've made CCTS and CRTC complaints as was recommended. I got an answer from the CCTS and they forwarded my complaint to Rogers. Rogers then contacted me from the Office of the President. Unfortunately that didn't yield any results so far and the person I spoke with stated they would object to the complaint. I've spoken to customer service management who admitted that policies are in place which clearly state that Rogers can and will reduce speed (throttle) the internet of those it deems fit to do so. They won't admit they are actively doing it to me however. I'll post updates as things move along over time like I was doing in the other thread.
I've done lots of troubleshooting so far thanks to people like Datalink but the issue is ongoing. If anyone has a suggestion for further testing or has information that hasn't been covered yet I welcome it.
There's still questions that haven't been clearly answered so if someone wants to chime in with information like why turning on my VPN would make me go from 5 mbps to 200 mbps. Why my upload rate is completely unaffected while my download is god awful for a Gigabit connection.
Thank you to those who post help.

Cancellation lead time
Hi,
How much lead time is required for a service cancellation? You can't call in and say you want services cancelled in an hour, can you? What is the minimum? Tomorrow?
Also, can you keep the home phone service, and cancel TV and Internet? On my bill, TV and Internet rebates end in about a week, but the home phone is without rebates. Will the cost stay the same if TV and Internet are cancelled? I am planning on cancelling all three services with Rogers, but haven't had the time to port out the phone number yet.
Thanks in advance for any help :)

[TV] MyRogers... nothing in PAYMENT HISTORY
Recently, I was investigating a Cable TV payment puzzle, and logged in to MyRogers to check the PAYMENT HISTORY. It said "Sorry, you don’t have any history."
I clicked on Live Chat, and reported this problem to the rep. He confirmed our most recent payment from his records, and also assured me that ALL payments should show in PAYMENT HISTORY, on MyRogers. (Well, I would guess there is SOME display or time limit, but certainly recent payments should be there). The rep said he would "pass on this problem" to technical services, or something like that. (I have the chat transcript)
-This past Thursday, we paid our bill again (over the counter, at a bank).
-Friday, I received a "Thanks for your payment" email from Rogers.
-Today, Saturday, I logged in to MyRogers...
The account balance reflects our Thursday payment, but again, THERE IS NO PAYMENT HISTORY, at all. BTW, we have been with Rogers for MANY, many, years, at this same address.
I filled out the FEEDBACK panel, again describing the problem. I'm sure some American online-survey company will act upon my comments, and inform Rogers, so they can initiate a fix! ;)
Anyone else noticed this problem?
Thx!
(I see others here have reported the occasional glitch with MyRogers.)
